On Specific Features of Poetic Language of St. John of the Cross
Abstract
The article deals with the stylistic phenomenon of poetic language based both on traditional and original features. The author emphasizes the role of the linguistic mechanism of compression that creates synthesis of forms and motifs in the poetry of St. John of the Cross. The analysis of a fragment of St. John’ poem The Spiritual Canticle demonstrates a range of textual and intertextual means of the implication, displaying subject-object and modal structure of phrases as well as a wide use of reminiscences among them. These means generate an implicit sense of the text in general and its symbolic interpretation in particular.
