Abstract

The article is concerned with the analysis of historical novel “The Tower of London”. The history of its creation is given. The fact that W. Ainsworth was the successor of W. Scott in the field of historical romance is emphasized. The connection of the involved romance with the Gothic tradition, in particular with that of A. Radcliffe, is revealed. The Gothic motives that the author uses in this romance are dealt with. “The Tower of London” by W. Ainsworth is compared with ‘Notre Dame de Paris’ by V. Hugo.
