Abstract

Th is article explores shift s in meaning of terms, which take place in a translation process. Th e analysis of shift s was made on the basis of various newspaper texts (such as Th e Guardian, The Washington Post etc.) and their translations. In the fi rst part of the article we take a close look at some scientific conceptions and approaches to the problem of translation quality assessment of both Russian and foreign scientists. In the second part of the article we analyse terms and translations of these terms on the basis of the following classifi cation: minor errors, major errors and critical errors. As a result of this analysis we can state that shift s in meaning may signifi cantly infl uence the meaning of a text, bring false associations, provoke wrong attitude to the subject of a message or mislead a reader.
