“Explanation of Unknown Words” from the Russian National library among the transitional lexicons
Abstract
The ‘Explanation of Unknown Words’ is a lexicographical compilation which can be found in two manuscripts housed in the Russian National Library: M. P. Pogodin’s collection, № 1655 and Main collection, O.XVI.1. It was created in the middle of the 16th century based on earlier glossaries to the Book of Psalms, John Climacus’s «Th e Ladder of Divine Ascent» and some books of the New Testament. That is the reason that it can be considered one of the lexicons of the so-called Transitional type, in which word entries included from diff erent glossaries are not organised alphabetically as in later compilations, but follow in the same order as in the glossaries, with additional fi xed sequences of entries. At the same time, the ‘Explanation of Unknown Words’ has a characteristic trait which distinguishes it from other lexicons of the type: some articles are rearranged by the compiler and can be found in diff erent parts of the lexicon. It is believed to have been done intentionally so as to organise them semantically.
