Common innovations method in the Swadesh list as an approach to determine the degree of language relationship

Abstract

The article presents a new way to use the Swadesh list in the genealogical classification of languages, which is to count the quantity of common innovations in the observed languages in comparison with the proto-language instead of counting matches in the Swadesh lists of the languages. The Germanic, Romance, Slavic, Baltic and Celtic languages material was used to prove the method’s efficiency.
