Transforming Reality: Personal Names in Ritual Speech (Vinogradyo – Carols from the North of Russia)

The article analyses how proper names are used in Vinogradyo, i.e. a song with ritual functions and semi-epic plot. Choosing one of the typical plots and using of the proper name of the addressee as the name of Vinogradyo personage depends on the social and gender status of the addressee. Those communicative parameters create unique symbolic reality, which transforms the social reality of the addressee.
