On gender features in speech: Dominance as a characteristic of male speech (based on the texts of English lifestyle-blogs)

The article is devoted to dominance as a key characteristic of male speech. Dominance in communication is due to the primacy of men in social life, the leading role of men is transferred into speech interaction as well. The aim of the work is to identify linguistic means of expressing dominance used most frequently by male authors when writing texts in lifestyle blogs, their analysis and systematization. The research material comprised the texts written by men and published in English lifestyle-blogs. The gender aspect in speech is the subject of research in the works of many outstanding scientists, but the analysis of this aspect on the material of the texts of blogs which can be defined as one of the key phenomena of the 21st century determines the novelty of this particular work and the author’s personal contribution to the problem. This choice of research material allowed the author to draw relevant conclusions about the characteristic features of male speech and determine the status of “dominance” as one of its key features. The author came to the conclusion that dominance is expressed linguistically with the help of notional verbs with the meaning of persuasion, modal verbs, the imperative of the verb and adverbs expressing modality on the lexical level and rhetorical questions on the syntactic level. These techniques are used by male authors to have an impact on the reader and impose their point of view. The maintenance of men’s dominant position in communication remains unchanged despite modern trends, there is no softening or emergence of alternative models of speech behavior on the part of men.
