Сестры Эммы Бовари: жены врачей в викторианской женской прозе

В статье ставится задача проанализировать образы жен врачей в творчестве британских писательниц второй половины XIX в. и выявить основные тенденции в их эволюции. Появление яркой монографии Т.Спаркс, посвященной образу врача в британском викторианском романе, вызывает потребность рассмотреть и образы жен врачей, ставшие весьма популярными в художественном творчестве викторианских писательниц. Материалом для нашего исследования послужили произведения Э.Гаскелл, Д.М.Мьюлок-Крейк, миссис Генри Вуд, Э.И.Теккерей, М.Э.Брэддон и Дж.Элиот, опубликованные в 1851–1872 гг. Исследование показало, что доминирующий в более ранних произведениях образ жены — жертвы мужа-врача довольно быстро сменяется образом разрушительницы его судьбы. Этот переход связывается с ослаблением позиций романтизма, интереса к готическим ужасам, а также с отходом от героизации преступной личности, характерной для «ньюгейтского» романа. При этом одним из наиболее мощных факторов, объясняющих эту перемену, является публикация «Госпожи Бовари» Г.Флобера, однако влияние этого романа на данный процесс нельзя абсолютизировать даже в тех случаях, когда автор (Брэддон) откровенно признает вторичность своего сочинения по отношению к «Госпоже Бовари». В качестве существенного фактора, позволяющего объяснить эволюцию образа жены врача в викторианском женском романе, рассматривается подъем т. н. первой волны феминизма, однако при этом весьма неожиданным для феминистской художественной литературы оказывается сочувствие, проявляемое писательницами к мужчинам, и их склонность критиковать жен, возлагая на них ответственность за семейные трагедии.
