Earliest Biblical-Aramaic and Syriac Grammars in Europe in 16th century
Abstract
The paper deals with the first European grammars and, partially, lexicons of Biblical-Aramaic and Syriac that date back to the 16th Reformation Europe. Aramaic as one of the two original Semitic languages of the Old Testament was explored in parallel to Biblical-Hebrew. It draws a conclusion that it was Aramaic that initiated the early development of European comparative linguistics.
